Teaching and Technology Tuesday - Shared screen with speaker view
Francine D'Amico
28:51
Is there a way to enlarge the captions?
Martha A Diede
29:51
@Joanna - I think you are probably right. :-)
Martha A Diede
30:50
@Francine - click on the close captions. You should be able to see a "Closed Captions setting". That should allow you to enlarge the size of the letters
Francine D'Amico
32:12
Got it thanks - also enlarged CHAT there
Martha A Diede
32:29
@Francine - Excellent!
Joanna O Masingila
34:20
Zoom has a HiPAA-compliant version that was a catalyst for getting the enterprise license, I think, since counseling programs needed this.
Nikki Beckwith
34:58
I used Teams
hongzengmartel
35:04
I look the access Zoom from BB feature
loredanalanzani
35:56
I have used zoom a lot, but never used collaborate, so can’t tell.
Jim Watts
36:35
Trying to decide
Ruth S Phillips
36:38
Prefer to skip fall entirely
loredanalanzani
36:48
my answer is ``don’t know yet’’
Socorro Koseki
36:59
they are different
Kari
37:05
I don’t know either
Leonid Kovalev
37:16
Decision will depend on what system is used by videostream from our classrooms.
Socorro Koseki
37:19
I am better with Blackboard
Prasant Ghosh
37:20
I use Blackboard because of less familiarity with zoom.
Kari
42:41
In the Spring I used BB for office hours, but a student in China could not see anything I shared. Her connection would crash. Is Zoom a more robust platform for office hours?
Anne Laver
43:02
Can you talk about how the automatic captioning for zoom recordings works?
Nikki Beckwith
43:20
How to you imagine we an provide good sound quality while streaming video if we teach wearing masks?
hongzengmartel
43:22
So even teaching in classroom, one uses either Zoom or BB Ultra so online students can join?
Ping Zhang
43:51
Are thre differences on bandwidth? BB Collaborate Ultra gave me trouble when many students used video.
Francine D'Amico
44:22
Is either one more accessible for students with disabilities or international students with limited Internet access?
Rachel
45:10
Should we be starting the zoom sessions from within Blackboard rather than just from the zoom website?
Prasant Ghosh
46:03
I do not think I have received the document you just mention.
Martha A Diede
46:26
@Prasant - It's posted in the chat. You can find the link to download it
Janet Brown
47:42
At some point, can you walk though a scenario where I am teaching half the class in person and want to have zoom going so that the other half can 'be there'. What happens when I step away from the computer camera to scribble on the physical white board in the room?
hongzengmartel
47:55
So even teaching in classroom, one uses either Zoom or BB Ultra so online students can join the session?
Moira (she/her) McDermott
47:59
I had heard that in addition to being able to share documents in breakout rooms in BBCU, you can chat with the breakout rooms in BBCU. Is that true? Can the breakout rooms send chat messages to the main room?
Anne C Bellows
48:14
Is there a better choice for break-out room use?
Becky (she/her) Schewe
49:31
If I pre-assign breakout rooms, how do I ensure that students access the Zoom app from the email address that I used to assign them to a group?
Joanna O Masingila
49:41
The Zoom training on Break Out rooms is Wednesday at 1 pm
Moira (she/her) McDermott
50:14
Breakout session is Wed 7/1, 1-2pm
Prasant Ghosh
50:33
BB allows share documents with instructor (2 pictures).
Prasant Ghosh
51:01
Would tell little more about hoe to do that in zoom?
Martha A Diede
51:47
@Becky - the students shouldn't be able to get into your class if they don't use the link that you sent.
hongzengmartel
52:20
For hybrid, I mean
Leonid Kovalev
52:26
And even very small classes may have students who are stuck overseas and cannot attend in person.
Martha A Diede
52:46
@Leonid - you are absolutely correct.
hongzengmartel
53:08
Connecting those during live session is what I envisionedn
Nikki Beckwith
53:56
Do we know when the University will officially let us know how our classes will be taught?
Barbara Applebaum
55:03
Can we have an earlier session on Kaltura? If it is accessible on 7/15 we may not want to wait until 7/21 to get it set up for class?
Martha A Diede
55:19
@Nikki - Check with your department chair. The deans should already have that information
Leonid Kovalev
55:52
Correction to the file: it says "No local save option for recordings" in BBCU but it exists - one has to "allow downloading recordings" in advance in session settings. The recordings can then be saved as mp4 files
Martha A Diede
55:52
@Nikki - sorry, meant your chair...
hongzengmartel
57:28
Are there total space limit for cloud recording?
Moira (she/her) McDermott
58:14
How many people can join a BBCU session and a Zoom meeting?
Anne Laver
58:42
Does Zoom recording including automatic captioning or just transcript?
Leonid Kovalev
59:32
@Anne Both. There is a separate text file with the transcript, and there is a CC option when playing back the recording.
Joyce
01:00:03
Will the classroom document camera be able to be shared on the screen when in BB or Zoom?
Anne Laver
01:00:51
Thanks @Leonid! Can you also download a Zoom cloud recording later?
Leonid Kovalev
01:01:37
Yes, it is available both as a video file and as a audio-only file.
Janet Brown
01:02:14
Can you explain how to make a content 'button' for Zoom in the BB site - I know this is possible.
Moira (she/her) McDermott
01:03:42
so kind of like webinar mode?
Annie
01:04:06
So I can’t set up break out groups in advance on BB Collaborate Ultra?
Rachel
01:04:06
If you are inviting a guest speaker to your class, is zoom a better option or can ultra do this too?
Martha A Diede
01:04:06
@Moira - yes
Annie
01:05:43
When students go into chat rooms, can they see each other if cameras are on?
loredanalanzani
01:05:59
So Collaborate Ultra is not suitable for test ``proctoring’’
Martha A Diede
01:06:02
@Annie - yes for sure in Zoom
Annie
01:06:46
What about in BB Collaborate?
Martha A Diede
01:06:57
@Loredana - if you are planning to proctor, Zoom is probably better
loredanalanzani
01:07:16
@Martha: tank you!
Michal Downie LLL
01:07:46
note: Students can opt out of video sharing.
loredanalanzani
01:08:32
Is it possible to disable the ``private chat’’ option on Zoom?
loredanalanzani
01:08:59
(Students are only allowed to chat with instructor, or with everyone)
Joanna O Masingila
01:09:07
Are we able to use the webinar format and if so, how?
Lynn Brann
01:12:50
Have the Zoom trainings that have already occurred been recorded? https://answers.syr.edu/display/ONLINESUCCESS/Zoom+Training+-+Teaching+with+Zoom
Janet Brown
01:13:05
Can the side by side doc be posted somewhere?
Annie
01:13:09
I have recorded lectures and they are listed on recordings page from most recent . Is there a way to change the chronological order of these?
Joanna O Masingila
01:13:11
Are we able to use the webinar format and if so, how?
Annie
01:17:40
UGH! I teach Small Group Communication and that’s a bummer!
Annie
01:18:28
How do they work on a document in breakout groups?
Martha A Diede
01:19:19
@Annie - they can work in MS Teams or Google suite.
Moira (she/her) McDermott
01:21:38
How do you share iPad/iphone screen in BBCU? Is there a way other than using quicktime?
Barbara Applebaum
01:21:56
Is there a way to alphabetize who is on the screen and/or keep them in the same place during the entire class?
Martha A Diede
01:22:41
@Barbara - in Zoom, there are 3 dots at the top right of each person's screen. You can "pin" their video in one place.
Kari
01:23:40
Instead of naming it “collaborate” you can name it “lectures” or “office hours”. It will appear on the students’ BB also.
Barbara Applebaum
01:23:41
Thank you.
Pinyuen Chen
01:24:00
Are we able to ask the students to open their browsers in ZOOM or BB during the exams? (So we could see what they are seeing on screens.)
loredanalanzani
01:24:55
@Michael: don’t first have to be able to interface your IPad with your computer screen? (Before sharing screen on zoom)
Barbara Applebaum
01:25:31
Martha - would that also pin the pictures for everyone? It is easier to get to know the students in the beginning of the term when the students are in one place.
Martha A Diede
01:25:49
@Barbara - yes, it pins the pics
Barbara Applebaum
01:25:56
Thanks.
Janet Brown
01:25:57
Yes, thanks for the zoom button info. In Collaboarate I made my tablet a student, gave it a name and made it a presenter, and could use the white board like that.
Martha A Diede
01:26:29
Zoom also has a whiteboard included.
loredanalanzani
01:26:52
@Martha: how do you write on the zoom whiteboard?
Martha A Diede
01:27:17
In Zoom, it's under advanced sharing optins.
Moira (she/her) McDermott
01:27:36
@Janet how did you avoid hearing yourself through the tablet, even if I turn the volume down I would hear myself, if I don’t enable audio, it won’t enable the video
Francine D'Amico
01:28:00
BBCU has white board too - both instructor and moderator and presenter can access, or all can access
Moira (she/her) McDermott
01:30:00
Wacom Intuos ~$70
Moira (she/her) McDermott
01:30:11
Clones ~$25
Prasant Ghosh
01:30:26
Thank you
